Missed call cost calculator, with the vendor statistics checked
TL;DR: Surfio's missed call cost calculator multiplies two numbers the business supplies: missed calls per week and the value of one enquiry in USD. It uses no industry average, because the published missed-call statistics contradict each other. On 14 September 2026 Surfio found vendor pages putting one missed call at USD 12.15, USD 100 to 200, and USD 1,200, and the same 62% figure credited to two different sources.

What does the calculator work out?
The calculator multiplies missed calls per week by the value of one enquiry in USD and shows a weekly total. It adds no conversion rate, industry benchmark or hidden assumption. The result is only as good as the two numbers entered, which is why the rest of this page explains how to find them.
| Missed calls per week | Value per enquiry (USD) | Weekly total (USD) | Over 4 weeks (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 150 | 450 | 1,800 |
| 5 | 200 | 1,000 | 4,000 |
| 10 | 80 | 800 | 3,200 |
The inputs in the table are examples, not benchmarks.
Vendor missed-call claims, side by side
These are the figures that appear most often when someone searches for the cost of missed calls. Every page below is published by a company that sells call answering, scheduling or phone software. Surfio could not open the original reports behind them.

Where do the missed-call numbers contradict each other?
The numbers disagree on every basic point. One vendor says 62% of calls are missed and another says 22%. A missed call is worth USD 12.15, USD 100 to 200, or USD 1,200 depending on the page. The same 62% is credited to BIA/Kelsey on one page and to Forbes on another.
- Miss rate: 62% against 22%, both from CallSetter's own page, credited to different studies.
- Value of one call: USD 12.15 (Ambs Call Center) is roughly a hundredth of USD 1,200 (CallSetter).
- Callbacks: the 85% no-callback figure is applied to two different groups of callers and credited to two different studies.
- Annual loss: USD 126,000 (AIRA, CallSetter) against USD 26,000+ (Ambs Call Center).
Surfio's reading of these statistics
Surfio also sells call answering, so Surfio has the same interest as every vendor in the table. For that reason Surfio does not pick a favourite number. Surfio's position: no published average should go into a buying decision. A business's own call log should.
How to find your own two numbers
| Input | Where to find it | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Missed calls per week | The missed or unanswered call report in the phone system or carrier portal, averaged over four weeks | Counting repeat attempts from the same caller as separate enquiries |
| Calls nobody could serve | A two-week tally at the front desk of calls that were answered but could not be understood, for example Cantonese-speaking callers | Leaving these out because the phone was technically answered |
| Value per enquiry | Average first sale or first-year revenue per new client, multiplied by the share of phone enquiries that become clients | Entering the full sale value without the conversion share |
Add the missed calls and the calls nobody could serve before entering the weekly figure. An answered call that ends because nobody speaks the caller's language loses the enquiry just as surely as a ring-out.
When the missed caller speaks Cantonese
No source Surfio found measures what Cantonese-speaking callers do when they reach an English-only greeting or voicemail. Surfio does not fill that gap with a guess.
A simple break-even check can be done by hand, separately from the calculator. Surfio's paid pilot costs USD 380 for 30 days on one line, with up to 50 answered calls. At a value per enquiry of USD 200, two won enquiries (USD 400) exceed the pilot fee. At USD 95, it takes five. Current terms are on the pricing page.
For how many Cantonese speakers live in each market, see the official speaker statistics. For the options when nobody on the team speaks Cantonese, see hiring, interpreters and answering services compared. How Surfio handles the call is on the service page.
Frequently asked questions
How many calls do small businesses miss?
Published answers range from 22% to 62% of calls, and every figure Surfio found comes from a vendor citing a report Surfio could not open. The reliable answer for one business is its own missed-call report averaged over four weeks.
What percentage of callers leave a voicemail?
SchedulingKit says 80% of callers who reach voicemail leave no message, crediting the Forbes Communications Council. Surfio could not verify the original, so treat it as a vendor claim.
Do callers call back after reaching voicemail?
Vendors quote an 85% no-callback rate, but apply it to different groups: SchedulingKit to callers who fail on the first attempt, AIRA to callers who reach voicemail. Neither original study was verified.
What happens to a non-English caller who reaches an English voicemail?
No published study Surfio found measures it. A business can check its own log for short calls and hang-ups on the lines that Cantonese-speaking clients use.
Is a missed call text-back enough?
A text-back only helps if the caller reads the text and replies. Some Hong Kong products, such as Cenvoi, list a missed-call text-back feature. Whether it recovers Cantonese-speaking callers is not measured in any source Surfio found.
