Cantonese answering service for accountants and tax preparers (2026)
TL;DR: Surfio takes the Cantonese-speaking client calls an accounting or tax practice cannot handle, finds out what the client needs, books the appointment if they want one, and emails the accountant an English summary with the recording and transcript. Surfio gives no tax advice: questions about deductions, liabilities or filing positions go to the accountant. The service is most useful to firms whose Cantonese-speaking clients phone around filing deadlines, when the one bilingual staff member is fully booked.

Plan around the filing deadlines your clients face
Tax practices know their busy weeks in advance. The official individual filing dates below are the natural points to time a 30-day pilot, so it measures Cantonese calls in the weeks when the office phone is hardest to answer.
| Market | Return | Published due date | Tax authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Federal return, calendar-year filers | April 15, 2026 for 2025 returns (moves to the next business day if it falls on a weekend or legal holiday) | IRS: When to file |
| Canada | 2025 personal income tax return | April 30, 2026; June 15, 2026 if the taxpayer or spouse is self-employed (balance still payable by April 30) | CRA: Due dates and payment dates |
| United Kingdom | Self Assessment, 2025 to 2026 tax year | Paper return by 31 October 2026; online return and payment by 31 January 2027 | GOV.UK: Self Assessment deadlines |

Keep the advice with the accountant; put the admin on the call
A Cantonese-speaking client ringing a tax practice mixes two kinds of question. Some need a qualified answer. Others are administration that any intake call can record. The line between them should be written down before the pilot, so the call never drifts into advice.
| Stays with the accountant | Recorded on the Surfio call |
|---|---|
| "Can I claim this?" and any deduction question | The client's name, the entity or person the return is for, and the tax year |
| How much tax is owed, or how much comes back | Whether the client is new or existing, and who referred them |
| Whether to amend a past return | That a government letter arrived, its date and what the client says it is about |
| Business structure or residency questions | Which documents the client says they already have, against the firm's own checklist |
| Fees for a specific engagement | An appointment, booked during the call where the client wants one |
A client who hears a confident guess about a deduction on the phone will quote it back at the appointment, so Surfio's calls record the tax question and leave the answer to the accountant. The English summary records the client's question, and the recording keeps the exact words, so the accountant answers the real question at the appointment. Surfio also writes the enquiry into the firm's own CRM, so nobody retypes it during a deadline week.
Do AnswerHero or Abby answer calls in Cantonese?
Their public pages checked in September 2026 do not say. AnswerHero's accountant page lists "Bilingual Answering and Translation" without naming languages. Abby's accounting page offers tax-season overflow "From $165/mo", as shown in the Google snippet, and its bilingual page names English and Spanish. Ask each provider directly before assuming Cantonese is covered.
| Provider | What its page says for accountants | Languages named | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surfio | Cantonese calls answered on a new dedicated line; English summary, recording, transcript; appointment booked; enquiry written into the firm's CRM | Cantonese | See pricing page |
| AnswerHero | "Answering Service for Accountants", message taking, "Bilingual Answering and Translation" | Not named in the result | "Custom plans", as cited by trtc.io |
| Abby Connect | "Tax-season overflow, client scheduling and confidential message taking" | English and Spanish on its bilingual page | "From $165/mo", as shown in the Google snippet |
| Face For Business (UK) | Answering service for accountants; calls "answered by trained professionals" | Not named in the result | None in the result |

Time the pilot to the month before a filing date
A pilot run in a quiet month tells a tax practice little. The same 30 days in the run-up to a filing date shows how many Cantonese-speaking clients actually phone when the office is busiest, which is the number that decides whether a monthly retainer would stay inside its included minutes in peak season. The rates are on the pricing page.
Surfio issues a separate Cantonese line for the pilot. It is not an overflow of the firm's main number, so the firm needs to put the new number where Cantonese-speaking clients will see it before the deadline rush: the Chinese-language page of the website, the engagement letter, or the reminder email that asks clients for their documents.
Cheaper to hire? Three other routes accountants take
- Hire a Cantonese-speaking accountant. Indeed's US results showed 468 Cantonese accountant jobs in September 2026, so employers do hire for the skill. A qualified bilingual accountant does far more than answer calls, and costs a salary.
- Seasonal bilingual temp. Covers the peak, but needs recruiting and training each year, and leaves the off-season uncovered.
- Refer Cantonese speakers elsewhere. Directories list Chinese-speaking CPAs, for example a Yelp page for Diamond Bar, California, where a CPA is described as speaking Mandarin, Cantonese and English. Referring out loses the client.
Surfio is the narrow option: it answers the Cantonese calls and hands each enquiry back in English, without adding a person to the payroll. For the wider staffing question see options when nobody speaks Cantonese.
Firms that should not buy this
- A Cantonese-speaking partner already takes client calls through filing season.
- Cantonese-speaking clients book through a client portal or email and rarely phone.
- The firm wants the call to explain tax positions. Surfio will not do that.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to speak with an accountant?
That is set by each firm. On a Surfio line the call gives the firm's own consultation fee only if the firm supplies it for that purpose. Otherwise the question goes into the English summary for the accountant to answer.
Clients ask if they can talk to an accountant for free. What will they hear?
Whatever policy the firm gives Surfio before the pilot, for example a free first meeting or a paid consultation. The call does not offer free advice itself, because it gives no tax advice at all.
Is client financial information secure on recorded calls?
Recordings of tax calls hold income and identity details, so how Surfio stores and keeps them is agreed with the firm in writing before a pilot, under the service terms.
Can the call collect a document checklist and book a tax appointment in Cantonese?
The call can record which documents the client says they have, against a checklist the firm writes, and book the appointment during the call where the client wants one. It does not tell the client which documents their situation requires.
Can Surfio take overflow Cantonese calls in tax season?
Not as overflow from the main office number. Surfio answers a separate Cantonese line that the firm publishes to its Cantonese-speaking clients, and each call comes back to the accountant as an English summary with the recording and transcript.
Do AnswerHero or Abby cover Cantonese?
Their pages seen in September 2026 do not name Cantonese. AnswerHero lists bilingual answering and translation without languages; Abby's bilingual page names English and Spanish. Confirm directly with each provider.
